Project Gettysburg León continues to work together with the rural community of Los Mangles to promote better nutrition through home gardening. This month, April, is one of the driest of the year in Nicaragua but the food gardens that PGL helps sponsor are still producing. In preparation for more rain and more production in the coming months, PGL held a workshop on how to create compost with mineral additives that improve soil fertility and help protect against fungus infestation. Twelve women from Los Mangles took part in this workshop. Local materials such as manure, leaves and carbon from wood fire stoves were combined with ingredients such as sulfur and magnesium to produce compost that will be applied next month to each garden bed in Los Mangles.
