Project Gettysburg-León (PGL) welcomes you, and looks forward to your joining our sister city partnership between the people of Gettysburg and Adams County, and those in León, Nicaragua.
PGL helps support support Solar Ovens for Nicaraguan Women, providing participants with basic carpentry skills, a safer, healthier and more ecological way of cooking, and income-generating opportunities.
Today Xuchialt has a four-year program in painting, dance and music. Most of the students are from lower income families, and PGL helps underwrite scholarships for them
Las Tias (“The Aunties”) is a support program in the city of León for economically deprived, at-risk children and adolescents who might otherwise be living on the street due to their families’ circumstances.
PGL is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation registered in the state of Pennsylvania. A grass-roots organization that is driven by on-the-ground needs in the department of León, Nicaragua.
Replacing the outgoing Student Program Coordinator, Kate White, is Elizabeth Belair. Elizabeth, who comes from Camden, Maine, visited León last January with the Gettysburg College student delegation. She will be a sophomore at Gettysburg next fall. As Student Program Coordinator she will be the liaison between Project Gettysburg/León and the students at Gettysburg College.
The target of 7-10 participants in the Community Delegation to León this August was not only met, but exceeded, as eleven participants registered for the trip. The final amount that the 4th and 5th grade students at Lincoln Elementary raised for Taller Artistico Xuchialt was $670. PGL’s monthly meeting on Sunday May 5th will feature a presentation by Peter Boving and Edger, “Cinco de Mayo y Quince Septiembre: A Look at Mexican and Nicaraguan History.” The meeting will be hosted by Joyce Ettenger at her home at 1776 Baltimore Pike and will be from 5-7pm.
